Let’s do this!
Hi friends! Rachel here…For my first ever blog post, I wanted to share with you how our House of Five idea came to be.
I can’t believe this is real! Here we are, posting our first post and making our dreams a reality.
I have been thinking about this idea for years now. I have told John about my t-shirt ideas and how I wanted to use my creative mind to add joy and light to the world. I grew up as a dancer and loved showing my creativity through movement in dance. As I have gotten older, I am no longer dancing and have felt the nudge to express my creative side in another way. I am thrilled to be to working together with my husband to create designs to bring to YOU!
To get to where we are today, I am going to have to reflect back a bit, so here we go…
I started staying home with Ellie and Brecken in November of 2019 when Brecken was born. At the time I was working as a health and physical education teacher. I planned to go back to work after my normal 6 week maternity leave. Little did I know that our life circumstances would change very quickly…
(I will do another post another day where I explain everything that happened after Brecken was born, but for now, I will give you the cliff notes version.) Brecken spent 2 weeks in the NICU after he was born. We found out a few days in that he was born with a lack of surfactant in his lungs. Once he was given a surfactant injection, things started looking up for the little guy. Then just 4 weeks later, at 6 weeks old, he got a strain of Coronavirus. With his “lung injury” at birth, it was too much for his little body to handle. He was put on a ventilator for a week and we nearly lost him. At that time, John and I made the decision that I would take off the entire spring semester to be at home with Brecken and Ellie during such a difficult time. The pandemic was just starting and things were so unknown that we wanted to do whatever we could to protect our little guy when he got home from the hospital.
That summer, we revisited the idea of me going back to teaching. We made the (very difficult at the time) decision for me to stay home for the next school year. We didn’t know how susceptible he was to illness, so we wanted to play things safe. Thankfully, he is doing wonderfully. His little body is working perfectly. He is busy, active, and thriving.
I have been a stay-at-home-mom since November of 2019. I enjoyed teaching, but it never fulfilled me the way dancing, and coaching did. I really and truly LOVE being home with my kids. I love being a part of each moment of their day. Seeing them wake up in the morning, making them breakfast, snuggling on the couch, watching them get lost in play together. Those special little moments are not lost on me. I love being here for it all.
In October of 2020, I started using and selling Monat hair products. I LOVE the products and I love helping others get started in their clean hair-care journey. Monat has healed my hair from the inside out and I am forever grateful that it fell into my lap. I truly enjoy selling Monat, but still felt that I wanted to do more. I wanted to create something from the ground up that was truly OURS. I am happy to continue to use and sell Monat products, while adding more that I feel so passionate about. I am so happy that I got the nudge (from my dear husband) to go for it and start this company that I have been dreaming about.
When we got the nudge to finally pursue this passion and make it a reality, I found out I was pregnant with baby number three (see my next post). We were talking about company names and logos, when John suggested, “House of Five”. We looked at each other and we both knew that it was the perfect fit. The perfect timing. It was meant to be.
We are thrilled to welcome to baby number three in July and truly become…
House of Five.
Here we go! Let’s do this!
